Salzburg
The birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is split between the baroque architecture and poetic spires of the UNESCO recognised Old Town and the verdant gardens which speckle the city – all of which combine to offer a great destination for a short break holiday.
A busy destination the whole year round, Salzburg – Austria's fourth largest city – is a magnet for tourists; drawn to the historic Salzburg Cathedral, Fortress Hohensalzburg and Nonnberg Abbey. The city was also one of the settings for the eternally popular 'A Sound of Music' which still sees guests flocking to the sites featured in the film. Some 4,000 cultural events take place each year in the city, which combined make Salzburg one of the most important cultural metropolises in Vienna, if not Europe. Events at the Felsenreitschule musical hall are a particular highlight.
Finally, while the city itself has no winter sport facilities, it acts as a gateway to skiing areas to the south of the country, in the Alpine Mountains.
