One great way to get an appreciation for the region's wonderful scenery is to go walking. There are a range of routes throughout the county, so there'll certainly be something for people of all ages and abilities; however, for a really iconic hike you should look to trek along at least some of the Dorset Coast Path.
This trail forms part of the 138 km South West Coast Path, starting at Lyme Regis and ending at Poole Harbour, and here you'll be able to take in some amazing sights. Just two of the many highlights of your walk will be seeing Chesil Beach – a long barrier of pebbles that stretches between Portland and West Bay – and Golden Cap, the highest point of the entire south coast.
If you're keen to go for a stroll, you should definitely spend some time on the Jurassic Coast. Not only can you get fresh air and exercise when walking along here, but you'll also be able to go fossil-hunting. Lyme Regis and Charmouth are said to be two of the best beaches in the area to search for the remains of ancient creatures.
The Jurassic Coast was the first natural site in England to receive UNESCO World Heritage status and among the many spectacular landmarks here are Durdle Door and the horseshoe-shaped Lulworth Cove.
But walking is certainly not the only activity you can take part in along the Dorset coast. If you are a sports lover, you may well be inclined to play a few rounds at Weymouth Golf Course and in doing so you'll be able to soak up fantastic views of the sea.
Alternatively, you could go horse-riding along the seafront or take a steam train ride to see the imposing ruins of Corfe Castle.
Of course, a main draw for those booking holiday cottages in the UK here is the opportunity to participate in a range of water sports.
Diving and windsurfing are two popular pursuits in the county, while you can also go kitesurfing and take sailing excursions from Christchurch Harbour.
But if you're keen for a little culture, you'll find plenty of this along the Dorset coast.
Bridport Museum and Sidmouth Museum are among the numerous historic venues you can visit, with several exhibitions focusing on fossils, mosaics and other artefacts unearthed in the local area.
