Klagenfurt
The historic town of Klagenfurt – which has a population of just 90,000 – is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia and makes an ideal location for a short break holiday in Austria.
Nestled on the shores of the Wörthersee, one of Europe's largest and warmest alpine lakes, the town is town is perfect for exploration either as a standalone destination or a stop off on a wider trip. The Old Town – which has twice been awarded the prestigious Europa Nostra Diploma – is home to Landhaus (Palace of the Estates), Lindworm fountain and Viktring Abbey most of which are situated around the Renaissance Alter Platz (Old Square).
There are also range of intriguing museums, including; the Museum of Modern Art, the Provincial Museum; the Wappensaal; the Diocesan Museum and the Landhaus Gallery. The town is easy to explore on foot or two wheels and with its Mediterranean climate it makes the perfect destination all year round.
