Pleven
The city of Pleven is known as an important site in the Russo-Turkish War, and there are about 200 monuments to the war alone here. One of the most popular is the St. George the Victorious Chapel Mausoleum, built to honour the soldiers lost to in Liberation of Bulgaria during the Siege of Pleven in 1877. The bones of the soldiers who laid down their lives for Pleven are kept in a crypt. A park called Skobelev is located on the very site of the battle, with a monument symbolising the three times the town's blockade was stormed. Pleven is also known as a city of museums, most notably the Regional Museum of History, which houses about 250 thousand exhibits on the ancient, medieval and modern history of Pleven and the surrounding region. The Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition, a permanent art exhibit, showcases the work of Bulgarian artists, as well as popular Western European artists such as Pablo Picasso and Edgar Degas.
