Macedonia
The name Macedonia evokes the image of a great, ancient civilisation, yet it is similarly almost brand new, staking its place in Europe following the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.
For those interested in culture and history, Macedonia is teeming with historical sites and ancient ruins. The Sveti Naum monastery and the culturally-rich town Ohrid are some of Macedonia’s highlights. The capital, Skopje – the birthplace of Mother Teresa – is a bustling hub of activity and a melange of different cultural influences; from Roman to Byzantine, Ottoman to Yugoslav. A contrast of old and new, you will find sleek modern hotels above cobbled Ottoman streets and shopping centres around the corner from grand Byzantine churches.
For adventure-lovers, Macedonia is paradise. Its extensive national parks and lakes offer a huge variety of hiking, walking, climbing and skiing. The Mavrono National Park is one of the country’s best.
