All about Andalucia
Andalucia is the closest part of Spain to north Africa – making for a unique culture and history that is reflected in its varied architecture, art and other attractions.
It is the Costa del Sol – which comprises the coast of the province of Malaga – that is perhaps the most popular area of Andalucia among British and Irish holidaymakers thanks to its golden beaches, clear blue waters, wonderful food and hours of sunshine.
The city of Malaga itself has plenty to occupy visitors due to the fact that it was where Picasso was born and is also home to many historical attractions that display how Arab culture influenced Spanish tastes following the conquests from the eighth century onwards.
Head west along the coast and you'll find another destination with much to offer tourists – Marbella. Here, golf lovers will be in their element with around a dozen courses to choose from, all set against the magnificent backdrop of the southern Spanish coastline.
Water sports, horse riding, tennis and other pursuits are also available to those staying in one of the many Marbella villas that are available, while the town's historic quarter is sure to delight visitors with its picturesque churches, Roman archaeological sites and whitewashed buildings.
If you travel further west along the Costa del Sol you'll come to Estepona, a small, pretty inland town home to architectural sights such the 15th century San Luis castle and the 18th century church of Nuestra Senora de los Remedios.
The local cuisine is well worth trying – sample spit-roasted sardines, octopus salad, gazpachuelo and sweet Malaga wines during your stay in the area and you'll be in food heaven.
Smaller destinations that you can take in along the Costa del Sol include the whitewashed village of Manilva not far from Estepona, where you can see a 16th century church and Duquesa Castle before exploring the many vineyards that can be found in the area.
Elsewhere, eastern Andalucia is home to Nerja, which is perhaps best known for its caves and the prehistoric art that they contain. The town's other attractions include the 16th century hermitage of Nuestra Senora de las Angustia and the striking Torre de Maro watchtower.
