Why we’re loving Breda this week…it's Redhead Days Festival 2013!
If you happen to be in Breda, the Netherlands, this weekend and find yourself surrounded with redheads, you haven’t gone colourblind – it’s the 2013 Redhead Days Festival!
A free, three-day celebration for redheads – who make up less than one percent of people in the world – the festival is expecting to attract over 5,000 flame-haired revellers from all over the globe.
Culminating in World Red Hair Day on September 1st, this year’s festival theme is ‘blue’ and will feature parties, documentaries, fashion shows, photo shoots, musical performances, exhibitions, fairs and even whiskey tasting sessions!
Highlights include the Redhead pub crawl around Breda, a carrot tossing competition (whoever throws it furthest wins!), a Lindyhop workshop and the Redhead Oscars ceremony, which includes a prize for whoever travelled furthest to be at the festival.
With 13 per cent of its population being naturally red-haired, Scotland boasts the highest country percentage of redheads in the world and each year many hundreds travel to the annual Redhead Days festival in Breda to celebrate their ginger tresses.
In marking this year’s gathering, Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, is designating flight BE1285 from Inverness to Amsterdam on Friday August 30th as an official redhead flight.
Flybe is aiming to create a new world record by carrying the largest ever number of redheads on one flight. This will include a 100 per cent red-haired Flybe crew and an invited selection of the UKs most high profile redheads!
All redheads booking on this special flight and travelling on the day will be given a voucher at the airport for a free return flight on any of the routes operated by Flybe from Inverness.
Simon Lilley, Flybe’s Director of Marketing, says that the flight has received an extremely enthusiastic response both from Flybe’s crew and from the many people who have already booked to take this flight.
“This is a fun initiative and we hope that everyone enjoys being a part of what we hope will create a little bit of aviation history – not to mention having the opportunity to receive two flights for the price of one!”
