And as seasoned travellers ourselves, there is very little we don't know about going away on a break of this kind.
Because of this, when you put your gap year dream in our hands, you can be certain that we will deliver all that you expected and much more besides.
And if you need advice on any aspect of your trip at all, we are here to help.
However, perhaps the biggest decision you will have to make is where exactly it is you want to visit. So, for a little inspiration, read on.
Find the gap year that is perfect for you
With so many gap year ideas for you to choose from, selecting the break that ticks every box may seem daunting.
If there is one particular country you have always wanted to visit, such as Thailand, Australia or South Africa, then making your decision may be easier, but if this is not the case then the best way to narrow down your list is to focus on what you are passionate about.
Should you have your sights firmly set on getting off the beaten track and exploring little-trodden paths then countries like China, Namibia and Ecuador give you the chance to do just that.
Or, if you are something of a thrill seeker, then a gap year in Canada, Australia or Costa Rica indulging your passion for activity and sport could be the perfect trip for you.
Culture vultures may wish to head to Vietnam, Peru or the US, while animal-lovers are sure to go wild for a stay on the Galapagos Islands, near an African nature reserve or among the elephants of Sri Lanka.
Next, you should determine how much time you are willing to spend away from home and what your budget will be – remember, in some countries you can always work part-time during your stay if you want to boost your finances a little.
If you are still stuck then ask your friends and family to help you make the decision, as they are likely to have a good idea of what appeals to you.
Make your gap year a responsible one
Here at Real Gap Experience, we are passionate about helping to conserve the beauty and culture of the countries we visit and we believe that responsible gap travel could be an event you remember for the rest of your life.
This means that we strive to ensure the packages we offer are sustainable and that all our trips respect the environment, tradition, businesses and people of the countries we travel to.
With this in mind, what could be better than giving back to the destination that has made you feel so welcome and allowed you to do and see so much?
And whatever your skills and interests, you will find a gap year that is suited to you, whether you teach at a school in Africa or help build a care centre in Thailand.
This is the best way for you to really get a sense of authentic local life and have unique experiences that can never be repeated.
