Although people who visit New York often do so with the intention of tucking into great cuisine, many tourists who come to the city will often spend all, if not some, of their time in Manhattan. Admittedly, this is New York's busiest and most famous borough, but that's not to say it's the only place in the city where you can try fantastic fare, as Staten Island also offers the chance to do this.
By heading to the region, you'll find restaurants that serve cuisine from every corner of the globe. Once you've taken care of essentials like booking a flight to Newark Airport and arranging hotel accommodation, have a look at our picks of some of the great eateries in the area to dine at.
Nove
Staten Island is awash with fantastic Italian restaurants, so it's the ideal place for pizza and pasta-loving tourists to visit. Head to Nove, however, and you'll get to sample authentic dishes that originate from the southern regions of the European country.
Among the main meals offered by the Richmond Avenue-based establishment are filetto di pomodoro – which features rigatoni pasta, parma ham, sweet onions and a tomato sauce – and cavatelli, which contains oven-dried tomatoes and asiago cheese, among other ingredients.
As you would expect, the eatery also has an extensive selection of Italian wines – including ones produced in Sicily and Tuscany – but you can also try vintages from other popular winegrowing regions like California and Spain.
The restaurant has received a number of prestigious awards over the years – including a 2010 Best Pasta award from the Eger Foundation and a listing on the 2012 Michelin Guide – so you can be sure the food here is of the highest quality.
La Strada
Booking a table at La Strada also puts you in line to have great-tasting Italian fare, with gnocchi bolognese and rigatoni caprese among the many options to choose from when you sit down for an evening meal.
In addition, La Strada serves a wide selection of seafood dishes, including sauteed lobster and calamari marinara. The latter consists of sauteed calamari rings placed on a bed of linguini pasta and is served with a tomato and white wine sauce. Much like Nove, the restaurant specialises in Italian wines, with Borgo Conventi, Due Torri and Nozzole Riserv just three of the brands from the country that are on the menu.
Situated on New Dorp Lane, the establishment serves lunch Monday to Friday and is open for dinner every night of the week, so there should be plenty of opportunity to incorporate a meal here during your holiday in New York.
Talay Thai
Staten Island is certainly famous for its Italian cuisine, but it's not the only type of food worth eating here. As you might have guessed from its name, the Talay Thai restaurant on Hylan Boulevard serves wonderful Thai dishes.
Here, you can order the likes of mee kang – which contains rice noodles, cabbage and crispy tofu served in a curry sauce – along with tamarind duck and pad thai in an eatery that features authentic Asian decor. The restaurant runs a number of special offers for diners, including early bird options, though it's worth calling in advance to check what promotions will be on while you're in the area.
Marina Cafe
Seafood-lovers are certain to find a meal at the Marina Cafe a tasty proposition. Located on Mansion Avenue, the restaurant has served a great range of fish and seafood dishes to customers for over 30 years.
Come here today and you will find starters such as lobster bisque and Italian eggrolls, while clam linguine and lobster ravioli are just two of the entrees available. No matter what you select from the menu, the eatery's position overlooking Great Kills Harbour enables you to take in fantastic views of the water as you eat.
