Milan
The second largest city in Italy, this wealthy metropolitan area is the capital of clothing design, launching such lines as Armani, Versace, Prada, and Gucci, making Milan a must-see for anyone interested in fashion.
In addition, Milan hosts a number of world-famous designer stores, cultural landmarks, and an active nightlife. In the centre of the city sits the picturesque Milan Cathedral, whose many spiked spires create an intense, if imposing, viewing experience. More famous is the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, whose ornate beauty is only enhanced by Leonardo da Vinci's famous The Last Supper painting, displayed in the refectory. The stately castle complex Castello Sforzesco, built by the reigning Sforza family, also houses a handful of fine museums displaying ancient art, applied art, Roman and Egyptian archaeology, and works by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Those eager to sample Milan's worldwide renown for fashion should head to the Quadrilatero d'Oro, or Golden Quadrilateral, to experience Milan's main fashion shopping district full of famous and high-quality designer shops.
