Newcastle is well-known for its nightlife, with most venues within easy reach of each other. Perhaps the best thing about a night out here is the fact that there's something for everyone, whatever your preferences. Read our guide to find out more.
Real ale trail
Newcastle and surrounding area has a fantastic selection of pubs for lovers of real ale. Our picks are:
• The Crown Posada – One of the oldest pubs in Newcastle, the quayside-based Crown Posada has picked up its fair share of awards for its extensive range of cask ales and a historic setting in a Grade II listed building.
• The Bacchus – This stunning ship-themed pub offers plenty of ales and wines, along with a decent food menu. Its central location means the Bacchus is a popular stop for a pre-show or gig drink, as well as convenient for those staying in hotels or other accommodation in Newcastle's city centre.
• The Cluny – Situated in Ouseburn, this pub is famous for its live music and burgers, as well as its ales. It also doubles as an art gallery, making the Cluny an excellent destination for a cultural evening out.

If your ideal night out involves cocktails and a classy setting, these are the places to head to:
• Popolo – This Italian-style venue is perfect if you like the idea of a huge choice of drinks and massive plates of food to go with them! Open throughout the day, this is the place to go for Newcastle's cool crowd.
• Alvinos – You're unlikely to run out of options when selecting a cocktail at Alvinos. The venue also sells plenty of imported bottled beer and food ranging from pizzas and hotdogs to burgers and lighter bites. Visit at the weekend to be treated to a DJ set.
• Tokyo – This sophisticated bar is perfect for the ultimate chic night out. Try one of its classic cocktails, indulge in a glass of bubbly (or two) and enjoy the views from the terrace and roof garden. Be warned: booking in advance is highly advisable!

If you want to keep the fun going well into the early hours, take your pick from these clubs:
• Digital – This Times Square venue is massive – there are two huge rooms with a total capacity of 1,400, as well as a top-notch sound system. Keep an eye on Digital's events calendar for upcoming gigs and other special events to really make for an unforgettable night out.
• The World Headquarters – This is the place to go for a clubbing experience with a difference. The World Headquarters's inclusive ethos and dedication to non-mainstream music stems from its beginnings as somewhere to go for music lovers tired of the commercial tunes that became the soundtrack to the 1980s.
• Perdu – Doubling as a cocktail bar in the early evenings, Perdu really comes into its own as a late night venue, when it stays open until 3am. It's a good place to head to if you're on a budget, as entry is free all weekend.
