If you enjoy staying in picturesque destinations when you book a break, consider the locations of Mevagissey and Fowey when choosing Cornwall holiday cottages for your next staycation. Both spots are renowned for their attractiveness and there's no better way to view these destinations than by ferry.
Mevagissey is a fishing village set in craggy hillsides and boasting some lovely beaches. Fishing is still an active industry in the port, which was once the centre of Cornwall's pilchard trade.
If you want to make your base here, you'll find plenty of holiday cottages in Mevagissey. Book close to the beach if you'd like to spend some time on the sand and you'll find some idyllic sandy locations here, including Pentewan and Gorran Haven.
Aside from the golden shores, there's plenty to keep you entertained, from art galleries and an aquarium to model railway exhibitions. A must-visit attraction during a break here are the Lost Gardens of Heligan – a mysterious estate that was developed into gardens in the mid-1700s but fell into disrepair for much of the 1900s. Now being restored to their former glory, the gardens are a renowned beauty spot well worth a visit.
Another popular pastime when holidaying in Mevagissey is to take a ferry ride over to the equally picturesque town of Fowey. The ferry runs both ways and you might prefer to book holiday cottages in Fowey if you're a fan of walking.
The settlement marks the starting point for the Hall Walk – reputed to be one of the finest round trips to be found in England. Meanwhile, the town is also well-known for its waterway, the Fowey River, which was the inspiration for Kenneth Graham's much-loved classic, The Wind in the Willows.
During your ferry ride here, you can take in some stunning coastal views of both locations, but it's what there is to see in the water that might really fascinate you. You can often spot creatures like basking sharks and dolphins frolicking the waves here, so make sure you have your camera to hand!
Once in Fowey, pop into the Headland Garden in Polruan to admire the greenery and enjoy a Cornish cream tea, make your way round the museum or spend some time soaking up the sun on the beach at Readymoney Cove.
You'll find plenty to keep you busy on a Cornish getaway, whether you choose to stay in Mevagissey or Fowey. Why not book your break today?
