The world is a truly wonderful place and there are some outstanding sights that you can discover on your holidays. While there are many beautiful spots, we’ve selected a few of the most breathtaking to get you in the mood for a bit of globe trotting.

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Ha Long Bay is one of the most famous and beautiful sights in Vietnam, with this vast bay home to 1,600 islands and islets, which tower out of the water. These rock formations are part of one of the most interesting limestone karst landscapes in the world and cruising around the bay admiring the various towers, caves, arches and cliffs is a wonderful experience.

The best way to see the bay is by sailing around in a traditional junk boat and, to get a closer look at a few of the more fascinating geological formations, hop in a kayak and paddle your way around the calm waters.

Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina

The Perito Moreno Glacier is part of Los Glaciares National park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s one of the attractions you can visit on a hiking trip in Patagonia, a region in South America that’s owned in part by Argentina and in part by Chile.

What’s astounding about this glacier is the stunning ice formations that can be seen at its face, including an ice cave. Of course, these change every year with the ice melting and torrents of water pouring off it in the summer, while the winter sees the glacier advance again. It’s a truly breathtaking and astounding sight.

Mount Agung, Bali

Mount Agung is the highest peak in Bali and watching the sunrise from the top of this volcano is breathtaking. It towers over the island and is an important spiritual site for Hindus, with the Besakih Temple complex on its southern slopes a reflection of this. Make sure you pay a visit either before or after your climb to marvel at the beautiful pagoda-like buildings.

The volcano itself is still active, with the last eruption having occurred in 1963. It’s 3,014 m high and the views from its summit are beautiful. As the sun rises, you’ll see the landscape of the island spreading out before you and some days you will look out over clouds that obscure the lower slopes.

Northern Lights, Lapland

There are several places in the far northern hemisphere where you can see the Northern Lights – or Aurora Borealis as they’re also known. Lapland in Finland is a wonderful choice, though, because there’s so little development here that the skies are free from light pollution, allowing you to enjoy one of nature’s greatest shows in all its glory.

What’s more, during the winter this region experiences long hours of darkness, giving you yet more opportunities to see the Northern Lights as they dance across the evening sky. The lights themselves are caused by solar activity and 2013-14 is predicted to be one of the most spectacular Auroras in years, making now the ideal time to consider travelling to this part of the world.
