What should I know about taking my pet on holiday overseas?

Taking your animal overseas may have been something you have so far avoided amid concerns your beloved critter would have to spend several long weeks in quarantine either before setting off or upon your return.

However, if your dog, cat or ferret is based with you in the UK and you wish to take a break in a destination within the European Union, you qualify under the Pet Travel Scheme – meaning there is no need for a quarantine period.

There are a number of things you will need to do in order to take advantage of this, including getting your dog microchipped, having him vaccinated against rabies and getting him a blood test to ensure that he has satisfactory protection against the disease.

Next, you will require an EU pet passport – although you will only be able to take five of your animals in and out of the country with you. Ahead of your return journey to the UK – specifically between 24 and 48 hours before setting off – your furry companion will need to be treated against ticks and tapeworm.

You should also ensure you travel with an approved transport company.
