For many British people, a summer holiday used to mean jetting off to an exotic destination, but nowadays British breaks are seen as much more than a budget alternative to overseas holidays. The UK has so many beautiful places to visit, from the spectacular scenery of the Lake District, to the rugged Jurassic Coast and sandy beaches of the South West, so you can never get bored of exploring the country. Here are some of the reasons why you might want to stay in the UK for your next break.
Huge range of destinations
The UK doesn’t just have lovely seaside towns, it also has bustling cities, charming villages, mountains, lakes, and everything you want to see in a holiday destination. For example, if you head down to Devon or Cornwall you get both beautiful rural areas and quaint villages, as well as Blue Flag beaches and pretty towns, so there’s plenty for every kind of visitor to enjoy. Because the country is small, compared to visiting a destination such as France or Spain, it’s easy to combine more than one area in your visit. You might spend a few days in one of the big cities, then a couple of days by the sea. The choice really is yours.
Attractions are of a high standard
If you’ve ever gone to a theme park or similar attraction abroad, you’ll know that the standard isn’t always great. However, Britain has a huge number of family friendly attractions, and in general they’re of a high-quality, clean, and safe. If you’re trying to find out what there is to do locally, take a look on TripAdvisor before you go, and check the reviews to see if the attraction is suitable. Britain also has some very clean and safe beaches, especially in the South West, with many places having lifeguards on duty during the peak months.
There are lots of ways to save money
Even in the era of cheap flights, travelling abroad can be expensive with costs including airport parking, reserved seating, luggage, and much more. If you holiday in the UK, you can simply load up the car or book train tickets, and go. Accommodation can also work out cheaper, especially if you book self-catering cottages, as this means you can shop in local stores and have the flexibility to cook your own meals. Cottages, apartments, and other such accommodation allows you to have a home from home experience, something that you don’t always get in a hotel room. It also means you aren’t stuck sleeping in the same room as the kids, and you can often bring your dog along.
Short journeys
If you factor in driving to the airport, taking the flight, and then transfers at the other side, even a short flight can waste several hours of your time. The UK has an excellent road and rail network, and nowhere is more than a few hours’ drive. If you fancy going further afield, you can always break your journey up into two days, with a stop in an interesting town along the way. Because Britain is full of exciting places to visit, it’s easy to find somewhere along your route to stop, or you could just be spontaneous and look out for places to stop along the way.
When you’re planning your next holiday, why not look a little closer to home? Staying in the UK avoids a lot of travel stress, and means you can enjoy a huge range of beautiful attractions. Best of all, it’s often cheaper than going abroad, because while package holidays can seem like bargains, there are often lots of hidden extras. By booking a cottage or self-catering accommodation, you can set your own pace and really enjoy all that the UK has to offer.
