1. Tenerife has its own microclimate, due to the active Volcano, Mount Teide. The climate rarely drops below 15 degrees centigrade and manages to earn the very accurate climactic label of ‘perpetual springtime’ as a result.
2. The Volcano, Mount Teide is a staggering 3,718m, or 12.198ft high, the tallest point in Spain. Attracting avid volcanologists, geologists and travellers from all around the world to view the incredible horizon line and massive crater or caldera shape below, the view is unforgettable. Lava flow formations are also visible and much of the soil is as a result incredibly fertile allowing the natural pine of the area to grow happily in great number – far higher and lower in altitude than would normally be possible.
3. Tenerife is the largest of seven main Canary Islands, and the south side looks out to a clear view of La Gomera. The Volcanic formation of islands, inlets and rocks amount to more than 200 and are constantly changing. The collection of volcanically formed rocks are known as an archipelago.
4. The Volcano is the third largest in the world from its base in the Atlantic Sea to the summit. Cable cars take many tourists to the sulphurous summit each year to sample the momentous view.
5. Tenerife lies at the same latitude as the Sahara Desert, and is a mere 62 miles from the West African Coast of Morocco.
6. Tenerife, although an autonomous part of Spain, once had an indigenous people called the Guanches, with the National Museum displaying ancient remains of native people, and remnants of ritualistic materials and tools. Caves in the South of the island also contain ancient drawings.
7. The Island of nearby ‘La Gomera’ still has its own ancient Guanches language that is heavily comprised of ‘whistling’.
8. Tenerife and the Canaries make up the most southern, austral part of the European Union.
