The dam, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since the early-1980s, is just a 30-mile drive from Las Vegas and is one of the world's major facilities for generating hydroelectric power. Nearby, man-made Lake Mead is a great place to escape for a few days if you plan to take a houseboat holiday on its scenic waters.

And nature lovers will be sure to want to stop at Floyd Lamb Park to spot some native desert wildlife as well as the colourful peacocks that are resident in the park.
