While the city of Oxford might be best known for its university and architecture, it is also home to a wealth of ways to enjoy the sunshine in the summer summer. From scenic parks to perfect days punting on the river, there are a host of things to do during day trips here.

Indeed, if you are hoping to visit Oxford during a break in the Cotswolds, you will find the attractions here are so varied that everyone in your party should find something to interest them.

Walks

Many people book self-catering accommodation in the Cotswolds with the aim of going on some scenic walks. A city may initially, therefore, seem like an unusual place to choose, but Oxford is home to some truly spectacular options.

Guided walks around the city's most famous sights are held several times a day, and these are perfect if you have never been here before – particularly as they allow you to enjoy both the sunshine and the striking architecture. If, however, this will not be your first visit, you might prefer to opt for a walking tour with a theme, such as around the sights associated with the Harry Potter films or the Inspector Morse TV series.

Alternatively, Oxford is also home to plenty of green spaces that are a delight to explore. Take a walk along the River Cherwell, or make your way to one of the many local parks. South Park and the University Parks are particularly popular and have a relatively central location.

Punting

An ever-popular attraction in Oxford is punting. Tourists and locals alike flock to the river on sunny days to make the most of the weather and the beautiful scenery and, since this pastime is so closely associated with the city, it is a particularly worthwhile activity to try while you are here.

There are several locations from where you can begin your punting adventure, and boat hire is typically on an hourly basis. The Magdalen Bridge Boat House is perhaps the most central place to start, but the Cherwell Boat House, located north of the city centre, is also an excellent choice.

Botanic gardens

Whether you are looking for a picturesque picnic spot, somewhere for a quiet, scenic stroll or have an interest in plants or gardening, the Botanic Gardens are an excellent place to visit. Home to a staggering variety of plants – including medicinal species – and trees from all over the world, these gardens represent some of the most scenic spaces in the city. The entrance is on Rose Lane, and season tickets are available, which might particularly appeal to regular visitors to the Cotswolds.
