Where to dine in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a cosmopolitan city, so it should come as no surprise that it is a great place to visit if you're a foodie. There is a wide selection of restaurants here that serve up cuisine from across the world. However, it's worth sampling traditional Dutch fare during your visit.
Dishes here are hearty and full of wholesome ingredients. Seafood plays an important part in the cuisine as the country has a long coastline, while other north European favourites are also popular, like sausage and ham.
After a long day of sightseeing, it's hard to beat sitting down to a hot stamppot – meat in gravy with mashed potatoes and vegetables – while the perfect end to a summer's day in Amsterdam is surely a bowl of mussels. Have it with a side order of friet – chips – and mayonnaise, which is another popular dish.
Read on for a few tips on what restaurants to visit during your stay in an Amsterdam hotel.
Haesje Claes
This restaurant can be found opposite the Amsterdam Museum and is spread across six historical buildings. On the outside these properties provide a beautiful example of traditional Dutch architecture, and inside you can taste age-old recipes as well.
The succulent fillet of cod in mustard sauce is just the right blend of succulence and spice, while the beef stew with red cabbage is a hearty dish on a cold day. For something a little lighter you can try marrow beans with pork's confit, while the veal entrecote with blue cheese sauce is perfect for treating yourself.
Moeders
Translated from Dutch to English as Mothers, this restaurant has a family feel to it where the dishes are inspired by home cooking. It is a quirky hideaway, with the walls covered in photographs and paintings of mums and each of the tables laid with different cutlery and glassware.
Meals served here include lobster soup, Hotchpotch – a stew with sausages, meatballs and bacon – and Fisher's Wife Salad, which has sweet potatoes, fennel and mackerel.
D'Vijff Vlieghen
This elegant restaurant is spread over five 17th century houses, giving you a taste of history as you taste the delicious dishes. In total, there are nine dining rooms and each has its own distinct style.
The eatery is one of the leaders of New Dutch Cuisine, with the menus boasting a blend of old and new while using only fresh local ingredients. Tuck into delicacies like raw scallops with creme of peas and mint, quail with creme of celeriac or pan-fried grey mullet. You can complete your meal with bread and butter pudding of macaroons.
Hap-Hmm
This hidden gem is a favourite with the locals of Amsterdam, where you can enjoy mouth-wateringly fresh meals for an affordable price. There's the great steak with homemade stroganoff sauce and puddings served with lashings of apple sauce or creamy curd.
Come here if you just want to take a break and grab a quick bite to eat before continuing with your sightseeing. Granny's Meatball is a particular speciality, as is the Gypsy Schnitzel with stroganoff sauce.
Loetje
This is a meat-lover's paradise and the menu is alive with hearty steaks and a few seafood dishes too. Some say you can try the best steaks in Amsterdam here, but there are plenty of more traditional dishes as well.
One of its real draws is that you can dine outside in the sunshine and watch the world go by. Come here if you want some simple food that tastes great – and don't forget to order that side plate of delicious friet.
