There are many different types of holidays you can choose to go on, from beach getaways to city breaks. However, one trip that is often underrated is time away spent getting back to nature. One of the best places to do this in the USA is New England – read on to find out why.
New England explained
New England is one of the most beautiful regions to travel to in America, with much of its area being covered by mountains, forests, rivers and lakes. If you really want to escape your busy lifestyles and spend a couple of weeks in peace and quiet, this is the place to come to.
Between its states of Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, you'll come across a variety of landscapes. Rhode Island, for example, offers the chance to relax on golden beaches and go sailing. However, if you head to Vermont, you can lose yourself within huge forests, enjoy mountain biking over country roads and have a go at skiing in the winter.
Wherever you go in New England, you're bound to come across pastoral farmland, woodland that turns a beautiful shade of red in the autumn and a rocky coastline.
Connecticut
With six states in New England, there are many things you can see and do if you want to get back to nature. In Connecticut, you can hike the Appalachian Trail, which will give you the chance to climb the 2,316 ft Bear Mountain. There are also lots of other treks you can try, including walking through hidden caves, forests and abandoned homesteads on the Indian Council Cave Trail.
After stretching your legs on the epic hike, you can enjoy a trip to some of the area's top vineyards. There are 24 in total throughout Connecticut and you can walk around the wineries and sample some of their tipples on a wine tour.
Vermont
Vermont is the ultimate activity state, and you'll find lots of opportunities to have fun in the outdoors here, which is great as you'll want to spend most of your holiday taking in the views of the breathtaking scenery of farms, villages, apple orchards and forest-covered mountains. There are opportunities to go fishing, hiking, biking and camping. You could also take part in water sports, as there are plenty of fresh-water lakes in the state. So, whether you want to hop in a pedalo with your children, try kayaking or have a go at sailing, you can do so here.
Maine
Maine is also a popular choice, with the state being commonly known as Vacationland, as it offers so much for visitors to do. Sailing is a popular pastime here, while you can also tee off with a game of golf. You could hop on a boat on a whale-watching trip or get close to moose on a safari tour – the choice is endless!
Massachusetts
Massachusetts may be best-known for being home to Boston, but you'll also find the likes of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island within the state, which are three beautiful areas to escape to. Cape Cod and these islands give you the chance to leave behind the rigmarole of daily life and you can meander through their quaint towns, look into their boutiques and enjoy dining in local restaurants, all while soaking up the splendid scenery of the Atlantic Ocean.
Rhode Island
Going to Rhode Island, you can explore its 100-plus beaches, whether you fancy strolling hand-in-hand with your partner on the sand, trying your hand at surfing or attempting to catch something fishing. You'll also find an abundance of farms, gardens and nature trails on the small island.
New Hampshire
Finally, New Hampshire, which borders Canada to the north, boasts huge mountains, thunderous rivers and colossal lakes. Its Mount Washington is the tallest in the north-eastern part of the country, while the Merrimack River measures 110 miles and the 410 mile Connecticut River also cuts through New Hampshire.
