The HMS Belfast, an iconic London landmark which has been closed to the public since November, is set to re-open with an extravaganza of family activities and events this May.

The ship made history during her service in the Second World War and Korean War and for the past 40 years has been a much loved visitor attraction, located in the heart of the capital.

Her re-opening on May 26th and 27th will feature a summer jamboree of free activities, including a barbeque on the top decks and the chance to meet HMS Belfast veterans and hear their tales of life at sea.

The experience will show visitors what it was like to live as part of a ship’s community, eating, sleeping and socialising together in cramped mess decks.

Phil Reed, director of HMS Belfast, said: “HMS Belfast shows firsthand what it was like to live and work on board a warship. Since her arrival on the Thames, more than 40 years ago, she has grown to be a national symbol of the efforts and endurance of sailors who took part in the Arctic Convoys, D-Day, the Cold War and Korea.

“London hasn’t been the same in the six months that the iconic HMS Belfast has been closed. Its re-opening in May has been a long time coming and is a cause for great celebration. And that is what we plan to do – celebrate, with all manner of exciting, fun and engaging activities and attractions on board.”

HMS Belfast has been closed to the public since Tuesday November 29th 2011 when a section of the gangway providing access to HMS Belfast collapsed.
