If you're thinking of heading off on a skiing holiday, one of the first locations to spring to mind may well be France. The country boasts world-renowned skiing facilities, and the resort of Tignes is no exception. Located in the south-eastern Rhone-Alpes region, the settlement is home to Europe's highest skiable glacier.
Thrill-seekers and daredevils flock to the resort to pit their abilities against the challenging environment of the Grand Motte glacier, which has an altitude higher than 3,000 m.
The natural landmark is located in the Le Lac area, which centres around a lake. This is a popular spot to book a break in Tignes, as is Tignes Les Brevieres – a pretty village characterised by attractive old architecture.
Many visitors hoping for an active getaway will also want to enjoy a lively apres ski scene, and you can find just that in both areas. Tignes Les Brevieres has several bars and a nightclub, while Tignes Le Lac boasts more than 50 brasseries and bars, as well as four nightclubs.
Either location is perfect for booking cheap ski holidays, and you'll find both modern and traditional accommodation to choose from. So, whether you're hoping for a contemporary apartment with the added ski-to-door benefit, or would rather stay in a rustic chalet with a wooden interior and log fires, you'll be able to find something suitable for your requirements.
Once you've settled into your base, it's time to hit the slopes! The largest skiing section of the resort is known as Espace Killy, which comprises 300 km of ski runs that vary in altitude from 1,550 m to 3,450 m.
Regardless of whether you're an expert skier or a beginner, you'll discover the area has piste to cater for all abilities. There are 22 green runs, 68 blue, 39 red and 26 black alternatives, as well as nine slalom courses and a mogul field.
A snowpark, boardercross course and a freeride area are additional draws for visitors to the resort, but the glacier is perhaps the feature that most attracts holidaymakers.
The natural landmark is a challenging location for skiers as a result of its high altitude, but the fact that snow falls here in both winter and some of summer makes it a popular spot for much of the year.
During winter, the glacier opens for winter sports on October 1st, but you'll also find snowfall here between June and August, when you can ski on the blue, red and black runs. As well as regular skiing, you can try your hand at cross-country skiing, snowboarding and Alpine skiing on the glacier.
Snowshoe trekking and climbing are other popular activities to have a go at, and if you'd like to learn more about the history of Grand Motte, you can always take a tour with an experienced guide, who will regale you with interesting information about the glacier.
Experts are sure to want to experience the high-altitude environment as soon as possible, but if you're inexperienced on the snow, why not book some lessons? Tuition is available for skiers as young as two and often held collectively with up to seven other people.
In addition to skiing, you can learn to snowboard, so you can develop new skills during your vacation! If this sounds like your kind of holiday, browse the many ski deals to Tignes and start planning your getaway today.
