Sofia
The second oldest city in Europe, Sofia was founded over 7,000 years ago by the Thracian tribe Serdi. Sofia is a modern city, yet it maintains a feel of old Europe that many other cities have lost in the sweep of westernisation. Explore museums such as the Bulgarian National History Museum or take in some art at the Sofia City Art Gallery and the Bulgarian National Gallery of Arts. Another point of interest found near Sofia is the Boyana Church, a UNESCO world heritage site. On the outskirts of Sofia lies Mount Vitosha, a perfect destination for those who love the outdoors. The mountain park is located just 30 minutes from the city centre and offers several activities for visitors. Skiing holidays are popular in the winter months but hiking around the peaks or visiting the architectural monuments in the area are also worthwhile.
