Festivals in Malta this summer

With Glastonbury not on the schedule this summer, festival lovers are looking to Europe to bring them their music kicks in 2012.

Malta is going to be home to three massive music events that offer something for everyone - from pop superstar Will.i.am to Italian cellist Enrico Dindo and Jazz musicians.

The biggest event will be the Isle of MTV - a free one-day outdoor concert on June 26th which is returning to Malta for its sixth year at the Granaries in Floriana. This year’s headliners include Flo Rida, Nelly Furtado and Will.i.am playing to crowds of more than 50,000.

Alternatively, the Malta Arts Festival runs from July 1st to 18th and showcases performance, music and dance at venues across the island, featuring both local and overseas talent, such as the Italian cellist Enrico Dindo and the Norway-based theatre group Odin Teatret.

The programme this year also includes plays by Beckett who found inspiration in Malta during his time there.

Jazz aficionados will delight in the Malta Jazz Festival from 19th to 21st July at Ta’ Liesse which offers a cocktail of different musical styles including vocal jazz, flamenco, hard-bop, fusion and latin jazz. Highlights for this year’s event include Grammy Award winners Al di Meola and Terri Lynne Carrington.

Festival goers can ditch their tents and stay at the Phoenicia Hotel, which is just a short stroll from all the action, and enjoy affordable luxury with prices from just £60 per person per night.
