Mexico proved popular with Brits searching for winter sun
Tenerife, Sharm el Shikh and Mexico are amongst the most popular destinations with customers looking for winter sun online in January, according to recent research by Thomson.co.uk.
More customers than ever before are searching online for holiday inspiration, according to the travel website. This January alone, the website reported an 11 per cent increase in page views from travellers searching for winter sun and summer holiday deals.
Holidays departing in the next six weeks received the biggest number of views – implying that there is an even larger demand for winter sun this year. Winter sun destinations Tenerife and Mexico were amongst the most searched for.
Summer holidays were also being researched by travellers, looking to bag a bargain deal in the sales. Fashionable choices included The Canary Islands and the Balearics. Thanks to the falling rate of the Euro, Spain was also a popular choice with travellers.
Within Europe, Croatia came out as an emerging destination – with 55 per cent more searches for the sunny country than last year.
A lesser-known choice of sunshine holiday – Cape Verde – looks like it is begining to make more of a mark by coming seventh in the most searched for destinations.
Nick Longman, Online Director for Thomson, commented: “It seems that British consumers are keener than ever to get away this year.”
“Our top searched and viewed hotels were our flagship Sensatori resorts. These hotels are all 5* and offer customers either full-board or all-inclusive stays, top class entertainment and childcare and gourmet food as standard.”
Traditionally it has been the third weekend in January that's been the biggest weekend for bookings. However, this year consumers were straight off the mark after Christmas and the 8th January was the biggest ever day for the Thomson website.
