New York is popular with couples on a romantic short break

New York has been revealed as the most popular short break destination for couples travelling this Valentine’s Day, according to research by Heathrow airport.

This Valentine’s Day nearly half a million passengers plan to fly from Heathrow between the 10th and 14th February. The majority of valentine’s passengers will be flying to New York for the weekend – making the ‘big apple’ the number one romantic destination for Brits 2012.

Other popular destinations for couples this year include the exotic Dubai, which rated second in the survey just behind New York. Closer to home, Dublin, Amsterdam and Frankfurt also all made it into the top five places to enjoy a short break this weekend.

The airport estimates that, between those passengers flying at the weekend, 74 kisses will be shared each hour – the equivalent to 1,258 kisses per day. This means that passengers at Heathrow kiss, on average, every 49 seconds.

London couples kiss the most, averaging around 26 kisses per week, whilst only 4 per cent of travellers do not kiss their other half at all during an average week.

Heathrow, which is no stranger to romance having been featured in the film Love Actually, revealed that Terminal 3 Arrivals is the most popular place to share a kiss in the airport. The result is particularly appropriate as Richard Curtis’s romantic comedy was actually shot on location there.

The research was based upon a 17 hour operational day at Heathrow.
