Hurricane Irene is predicted to reach the east coast of the US by the end of the week

Hurricane Irene has reached category thee stage and could become category four by the end of the day.

Hurricane warnings have been put in place for parts of the Caribbean and US as the hurricane approaches.

Earlier in the week the 120mph hurricane blasted through the Caribbean, striking the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos Islands and south-eastern parts of the Bahamas leaving thousands without electricity and water supplies.

Hurricane Irene is predicted to reach the east coast of the US by the end of the week.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised holidaymakers to monitor the US National Hurricane Center website for updates on the mega-storm as well as monitoring local and international weather reports.
